5.  Smooth the cultural transitions involved with the matrix

The matrix organization brings differing disciplines and perspectives together in novel arrangements. Different disciplines use different language and it takes a while to become "multilingual." Other aspects of the culture can benefit from positive attention:

  • The benefits of matrix involvement should be stressed with success stories shared early and often. The matrix is an opportunity to have good people learn how good their colleagues actually are; this can aid retention and new talent recruitment. Knowledge transfer, shared practices and best practices should be spread among matrixed and non-matrixed staff.
  • The meaning of a matrix assignment must be defined and managed carefully. What does it mean if you are matrixed? What does it mean if you are not matrixed?
